01 / FOLLOW THE REQUEST

An answer is only the surface.

Retrieval. Prompts. Model calls. Policy checks. See the work behind the response, and understand which step deserves your attention.

01

Pinpoint the wait.

Inspect individual spans instead of averaging away the slowest part of the request.

02

Account for the retry.

See the first attempt and the recovery together, including the extra time and sample cost.

03

Keep the context.

Follow the same request from input to response, with useful detail at every step.

02 / INVESTIGATE WITH CONTEXT

The slowest step deserves a closer look.

Switch to the slow-response scenario. The model span expands, while the surrounding steps stay the same. A useful diagnosis starts with that distinction.

BEFORE YOU EXPLORE

A few useful answers.

What does a request trace show?

A trace groups the operations behind a request. The sample explorer shows retrieval, prompt assembly, generation, a policy check and delivery, with duration and illustrative cost for each step.

How do retries change the picture?

The retry scenario keeps the failed attempt visible alongside the recovery. Total time includes both attempts. Sample costs are explicit; actual charging depends on your provider and failure mode.

Is the demo using live customer data?

No. The examples run entirely in your browser using fictional data. No prompts, API keys or model requests are sent to a provider.

Where should instrumentation begin?

Start with the complete application request, then add spans for meaningful operations. The Field Notes guides explain request boundaries, latency and retry accounting.

FOLLOW THE SIGNAL
